Most banks have their own online trading platforms (for example, TD has WebBroker and Scotiabank has Scotia iTRADE). To open a trading account, you’ll have to make an appointment at a branch and sign a couple of documents. Note that you have to at least 18 years old to open an account. Before opening the account, be aware of the related fees. There is usually a commission fee charged per transaction (usually about $9.99) and a maintenance fee charged every quarter. There are a couple of ways you can avoid paying the maintenance fee. If your trading account balance is greater than 15k, you make monthly contributions of $100 or you make more than three transactions per quarter, then you do not have to pay the quarterly maintenance fee (usually about $25).
