Session 1: Introduction to the Stock Market

  • Understand what the stock market is and how it functions.
  • Key Terms: Stocks, bonds, stock exchanges, market indices.
  • Activities: Presentation on the role and structure of stock markets, interactive discussion on how the stock market impacts the economy.
  • Application: Participants will map out major stock exchanges globally and identify leading market indices (e.g., S&P 500, NASDAQ).

Session 2: Understanding Stocks and Bonds

  • To set up investment account and make your first investment
  • Key Terms: Wealthsimple, TD Ameritrade, broker, fees, orders
  • Activities: Comparison game to identify differences between stocks and bonds, dividend calculation exercise.
  • Application: Create profiles for fictional companies issuing different types of securities, discussing potential benefits and risks.

Session 3: Fundamentals of Market Research

  • Learn to perform basic research on securities.
  • Key Terms: Earnings reports, P/E ratio, market cap.
  • Activities: Tutorial on using online research tools to find financial information, group activity analyzing a company's earnings report.
  • Application: Each group presents their findings on whether their assigned company is a good investment based on current research.

Session 4: Introduction to Fundamental Analysis

  • Understand how to assess the value of a stock based on company fundamentals.
  • Key Terms: Balance sheet, income statement, cash flow statement, financial ratios (e.g., debt-to-equity, return on equity).
  • Activities: Break down real financial statements in groups, calculate key financial ratios.
  • Application: Assess the financial health of a well-known public company using the calculated ratios.


Session 5: Investment Strategies

  • Compare different investment strategies tailored to individual goals and risk tolerance.
  • Key Terms: Long-term investing, short-term investing, risk tolerance, asset allocation.
  • Activities: Role-play with different investor profiles, develop personalized investment strategies using a mix of assets.
  • Application: Participants will create an investment plan for a hypothetical retirement fund and a college fund, explaining their asset allocation decisions.

Session 6: Portfolio Management

  • Learn how to build and manage an investment portfolio.
  • Key Terms: Diversification, portfolio rebalancing, index funds, ETFs.
  • Activities: Use of a portfolio simulation tool to design a diversified portfolio, discussion on when and how to rebalance a portfolio.
  • Application: Build a simulated portfolio aiming for either aggressive growth or stable income, based on provided investor scenarios.

Session 7: Understanding and Managing Investment Risks

  • Identify different types of investment risks and strategies to manage them.
  • Key Terms: Market risk, credit risk, liquidity risk, risk management strategies (diversification, hedging).
  • Activities: Risk identification workshop, scenario analysis to apply different risk management techniques.
  • Application: Develop risk management plans for two different portfolios (high risk and low risk) based on the types of securities held and the economic scenarios presented.
